From
the Social Education & Action Commission...The
“tab collection” is going very well. Keep collecting! This will be an on
going project.
Take time this month to become aware of the
mission opportunities offered to our church members. Members of the
mission trip to Honduras in October will tell us about their medical
clinic mission there. Members of the Mission Committee will tell us
about opportunities for mission in Appalachia for members interested in
doing some building projects closer to home. Also we are pursuing
opportunities for service and mission in the Greater Harrisburg area;
right here in our own back yard.
Prayers for
Peace
Offered in the hope the world will heal, and we will all learn to live
in peace.
Be generous in
prosperity, and thankful in adversity.
Be fair in thy judgment, and guarded in thy speech.
Be a lamp unto those who walk in darkness, and a home to the stranger.
Be eyes to the blind, and a guiding light unto the feet of the erring.
Be a breath of life to the body of humankind, a dew to the soil of the
human heart,
and a fruit upon the tree of humility.
A Call to Advocacy
God calls us to be full participants in civil society, to
make a difference for the common good in the public square. We are
looking for members of the congregation who are interested in visiting
their legislators to establish a relationship and discuss issues of
concern. We would visit together our own legislators to establish an
ongoing dialogue on topics such as legislative reform, transparency in
government and other social issues... When we advocate for justice, we
translate the church’s convictions about justice, peace and freedom into
reality.
If you would be interested in participating with others
to visit your legislator, please notify the church office or call Jean
Dankosky at 774-6642.

Mission in a Mug
Around the world,
coffee and fellowship come together, a warm pot of coffee is often the
centerpiece of fellowship, and gatherings.
Yet the small coffee
farmers who grow our coffee often struggle to make a simple living. As
world coffee prices have collapsed to their lowest point in decades,
farming communities from Latin America to Africa and Asia are facing a
crisis. Many farmers risk losing their land because of debt, families
are going hungry and children cannot attend school because their parents
cannot afford enrollment fees.
But, through the
Presbyterian Coffee Project, over 1600 congregations across the country
are making a difference. By purchasing fairly traded coffee, they are
ensuring that farmers receive a fair price, have access to affordable
credit and are able to invest in their families and communities.
Starting in September, Christ Presbyterian is joining in this mission.
Through the Presbyterian Coffee Project our congregation can enjoy
delicious coffee while helping small scale farmers in Latin America,
Africa and Asia build a better future for themselves and their
families. Please show your support by stopping by for coffee, tea and
fellowship each Sunday down by the kitchen.
Did you
know….?Downtown Daily Bread not only provides a hot meal 365
days a year, but also provides other services including shower
facilities for men and women. If you travel and stay in motels, bring
home the soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotions. We can send the soap
to the hospital in Honduras and take the rest to DDB. A drop off box
will be in the lobby.
LEND A HAND SCHEDULE & UPDATE:
Lend-A- Hand trip to Clarendon,
Arkansas
Last
month, this area of Arkansas experienced over 20 inches of rain. In
Arkansas alone, over 50,000 homes were flooded. The levee on the White
River was breached and the town of Clarendon (pop. 1,900) was totally
flooded. The water has finally receded. Between 350 and 400 homes
need ‘mucked out”. These are primarily single story homes on
slabs. To date, no other volunteer group has agreed to help.
THEY
DESPERATELY NEED OUR HELP..
A
trip from July 12-20 may be scheduled if enough interest is shown for
the trip. Bring sleeping bags, a pillow, an AIR MATTRESS, and muck
out clothes. If you have gone to Mississippi, you “know the drill”!
Cost will be $250 to cover the bus and all meals except
those
while traveling.
Call the office at 717-731-8888 or 877-211-700
to be placed on the bus roster.
Lend
A Hand has been in contact with Camp Victor Ministries in
Ocean Springs, MS and has tentatively scheduled a trip there for
November 8 – 16, 2008. Camp Victor (CV) is affiliated with
Lutheran Episcopal Services in Mississippi (LESM). Please visit their
excellent website at
www.campvictor.org
for additional information. CV is very similar to DVF with the bonus of
having several construction supervisors to coordinate the construction
work and supply delivery. Lydia Fehr will be functioning as trip leader,
with the help of several of the “repeaters”.
Please
consider being part of Ocean Spring’s recovery by signing up for the
November trip. An individual’s direct cost to participate is still $250
and we continue to rely on donated funds to cover the rest of a trip’s
cost. By God’s grace and with your support, the donations will continue
to cover our costs for as long as there is work that needs done.
Thank you.
